The last time I organized my makeup drawer was more than 2 years ago, as seen here. My makeup has expanded since and that solution does not fit my burgeoning make-up collection anymore. Determined to up my game from my last project, I decided to do a D.I.Y. makeup drawer dividers for my lipsticks/glosses, eyeshadow palettes, blushes and jars (eyeliner, paint pots).
The result is pretty amazing don’t you think? Read below to learn how I did it.
Tools required:
Foam board (I chose black for a sleeker finish), cutting board (bought from Daiso for QR7), any kind of hard cardboard (cereal box, soda box, or art paper in 300gsm), glue or tape, ruler, measuring tape, pencil, marker, X-acto knife, scissor, and notebook to take notes.
I got these transparent magnetic dividers from Daiso (pictured in the middle), but I didn’t end up using it because it was too short to hold my makeup.
Makeup Cleansing
First step was to clean up my makeup stash by tossing any makeup that were sitting in my drawer for years (here’s a good guideline to follow), and then laid it all down by type. I configured how I wanted it to be laid out in the drawer, making sure that I have easy access to the items I reach for on a daily basis. In this case, it’s my foundations and primers.
Draw a Plan
I measured my drawer and then measured the width of each of my makeup items, and this gave me an idea on how to utilize my drawer space effectively. I drew a plan and took exact measurements including the width of the foam boards.
Cut and Assemble Dividers
Cut the different dividers and assemble the pieces together with fast drying glue. Let it sit to dry.
D.I.Y. Lipstick Divider
You’ve seen this honeycomb lipstick divider from my last post, but I didn’t explain how I made it. First thing to do is determine the size of the lipstick divider. I wanted it to hold three lipsticks in one row and the column can go on till the end of the drawer.
For my drawer, I wanted it to hold 7 rows and 3 columns of lipstick. The cutting and measuring began:
Column Strip:
- Cut 2 strips measuring H 6.5cm x W 14cm (2cm x 7 rows).
- Draw a thick vertical line every 2cm (this is the size of your lipstick) to create panels.
- Draw a horizontal line, measuring 2.5cm from the top.
- Mark the top part of the column strip. This is your indication on where to make the slits later.
Row Strip:
- Cut 5 strips measuring H 6.5cm x W 6cm (2cm x 3 rows).
- Draw a thick vertical line every 2cm to create panels.
- Draw a horizontal line, measuring 2.5cm from the top.
- Mark the bottom part of the column strip. This is your indication on where to make the slits later.
- Create slits by cutting on the outer edges of the thick vertical lines on the marked part only. See above: column strips slits are on top, row strips slits are on the bottom.
- Make notches by cutting out a triangular line on the edges of the panels (top and bottom).
- Assemble by putting up the column strips and sliding through the row strips one by one.
D.I.Y Compacts Dividers
I wanted to organize my eyeshadow palettes, blushes and jars in columns instead of piling them up, so I customized dividers to line them neatly. It got a little technical here dealing with different sizes but it pretty much follows the same concept as the lipstick divider. Here’s how I did it:
The divider fits 8 rows per eyeshadow palettes, blushes, and jars.
- Measure the width of makeup items leaving 0.5cm wiggle room.
- Measure the depth of the thickest makeup item leaving 0.5cm wiggle space.
- Measure the height of the makeup items and subtracting 2cm, which makes it as the finger tab to pull out the makeup easily. Final measurements are indicated below:
- Cut strip number 1 measuring H6.5cm (height of the eyeshadow) x W16cm (2cm x 8 rows).
- Cut strip number 2 measuring H4cm (height of the blush) x W16cm (2cm x 8 rows)
- Draw a thick vertical line every 2cm to create panels.
- Mark the top part of the strips and cut 3.5cm slits on the marked area.
Row Strips:
- Measure and cut 7 row dividers according to the measurements indicated above.
- Draw a thick vertical line on the edges.
- Mark the bottom part of the row strips and cut a 3.5cm slits on the eyeshadow palette/blush edge and 1.5cm on the blush/jar edge.
Assemble by putting up the column strips and sliding through the row strips one by one.
The fun part! Place the assembled dividers into the drawer and organize makeup into their dividers
Here’s the end result:
The rest of my makeup items are displayed on a tray that sits on our bathroom counter. I used a tumbler cup and empty Diptique candle to hold my makeup brushes, lip glosses, lip liners, mascaras, and eyeliners.
Hope this will give you inspiration to organize your makeup drawer. I’d love to know what you guys think. Leave a comment below if you have any questions or If I’m unclear on something.
Ow and don’t forget to share this post to your friends!
Happy organizing.
