Some countries I visited trigger a certain fashion inspiration in my head. I think of Breton stripes when in Paris, long dresses when in Bali and a little ‘Kawai’ when in Tokyo.
Cuba is no different. I was inspired by Cuban men’s fashion when packing for this trip. I had a distinct image of Cuban musicians jamming in the street wearing linen men’s shirt topped off with their Cuban hats and cigar in their shirt pocket. With this in mind, I pack my panama hat and my pinstripe chambray set and off to Cuba I go.
I wore this outfit on my first day in Trinidad as I discovered the myriad of colorful houses and different architectural influences. Not wanting to look like a cliché Cuban tourist especially posing against a very typical Trinidadian house, I brought my own spin to this outfit with this playful bucket bag for a pop of color (and so I’m not mistaken as a man) and classic sneakers. I call this look ‘Cuban tourist chic’
My rendition of Cuban’s fashion was well appreciated by locals, even asking where I procured my hat so I’d like to think I looked more local than tourist. Paying homage to the country’s fashion is not such a bad thing after all.
